ILNA: German airliner " Germania " took off Sunday evening for its first non - stop flight from Berlin to Tehran.

Iran’s Ambassador to Germany Ali Majedi and Germania CEO Karsten Balke cut the ribbon ahead of Germania’s maiden flight during a special ceremony at Berlin’s Schoenefeld Airport.

Reacting to the new direct Tehran - Berlin flight after a more than ۱۰ year - absence, Majedi stressed in a brief interview with IRNA the importance of the non - stop flights between both capitals.

He said there have been a growing number of flights between the two countries as a result of the expansion of German - Iranian economic ties.

Germania will offer two flights a week on the route between Berlin and Tehran, according to Majedi.

There will also be twice - a - week direct flights from Dusseldorf to Tehran, in addition to a once - a - week direct flight from Hamburg to Mashhad, he added.

Majedi announced also plans for direct flights by Mahan Air between Tehran and Munich within the next ۱۰ days.

He pointed out that since he assumed office as Iran’s Ambassador to Germany some five months ago, there have been seven added flights from Germany to Iran.

Majedi noted the growing number of German flights to Iran proved that ’the ice of the Iran sanctions was thawing’ and German - Iranian trade ties were growing.

Our trade volume rose around ۳۲ percent last year compared to ۲۰۱۳, the Iranian diplomat said.

Meanwhile, Germania CEO Karsten Balke expressed his great delight over the first flight from Berlin to Tehran, saying it came at a time when the overall political atmosphere was steadily changing for the better.

He added his airline company was not only targeting Iranian expats and German tourists as its potential passengers but also business people.

These new flights are also aimed at strengthening German - Iranian relations, especially when it comes to trade ties, according to Balke.
