A former Majlis speaker and interior minister cited the Islamic Republic’s enhanced international status under President Hassan Rouhani as the main reason for his support for Rouhani’s reelection bid in the next week’s vote.

“One of the main reasons why I back Rouhani in the presidential election is the enhanced credibility of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the international arena,” Hojjatoleslam Ali Akbar Nateq-Nouri said.

“We remember the time when we were moving toward isolation, but now we have attained a position thanks to which the leaders of the six powers sat on one side of the negotiating table while the Islamic Iran was on the other side protecting the legitimate position of the establishment and the people,” he said.

Nateq-Nouri was referring to two years of negotiations that culminated in a historic deal on July 14, 2015, between Iran and P5+1 (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany).

It took effect six months later to give Tehran sanctions relief in return for curtailing various aspects of its nuclear program for up to 15 years.
